Oct 8 headline spike: what the order flow showed before it (short)
XAUUSD analysis, Oct 8: gold futures jumped $23.1 in one minute (12:17 ET) on a US political headline. Here is what the order flow showed before it, rebuilt order by order from exchange data. 30 seconds, no voice.
1. 12:06 ET, price dipped to the Asia low 4130.0 (XAUUSD ≈4106): a stop run. 114 lots from 21 sell orders in 26 milliseconds; 69 of those lots came from orders that had never shown in the book.
2. Inside the same burst a hidden buyer (an iceberg) at 4130.0 (XAUUSD ≈4106) showed 1 lot at a time and filled 40 (10 refills). A 30-lot bid resting there since 11:03 ET took 30 more.
3. The low held: 268 lots sold at 4130.0 or lower and price went only $0.80 lower, to 4129.2 (XAUUSD ≈4105). By 12:12 it was back at 4136.6 (XAUUSD ≈4113).
4. 12:17:11 ET, a US political headline: a 239-lot aggressive buy, starting at 4135.5 (XAUUSD ≈4112), then 3,384 contracts in one minute, about 25x the average minute before it, delta +676. High 4157.0 (XAUUSD ≈4133).
5. The spike stopped $0.70 under the London high 4157.7 (XAUUSD ≈4134), just above the day's value-area high 4156.1 (XAUUSD ≈4132). About half was given back within 4 minutes: 4144.0 at 12:21 ET (XAUUSD ≈4120).
The lesson: order flow does not predict news. It shows who is defending which level, so when news hits you know which side the market was leaning on. This is history, not a prediction.
XAUUSD equivalents use the GC to XAUUSD gap measured at the time (-23.8).
