Wyckoff and VSA on Intraday Gold: GC Volume, Sessions and a Worked Example
Lesson 7 of 8 · Advanced
The right data: GC versus XAUUSD
Spot gold (XAUUSD) trades over the counter and has no centralised volume; forex platforms show only tick volume. Real contract volume is found in COMEX gold futures (GC, 100 ounces per contract) and its micro version (MGC, 10 ounces). For intraday Wyckoff and VSA, reading volume on GC is the more sensible choice.
GC usually trades a few dollars to a few tens of dollars above spot. This gap (the basis) comes mainly from carrying costs and interest rates to expiry, and it narrows as expiry approaches. So any level you find on GC has to be converted for spot using the current gap: XAUUSD is roughly GC minus the basis. Measure the basis by subtracting the two prices at the same moment, and update it through the day.
Also watch for the roll of the active contract. GC volume is concentrated in the main trading months and moves from one month to the next around roll days; comparing volume before and after those days on one fixed contract is misleading.
Session times and relative volume
Gold trades nearly 23 hours a day, and its volume follows a repeating daily pattern:
- Asia: low volume and narrow ranges; a good backdrop for small ranges to form.
- London open (around 08:00 London time): a noticeable rise in volume and the first test of the Asian high and low.
- New York: the main COMEX session starts at 8:20 am New York time (about 13:20 UTC in winter, 12:20 UTC in summer) and major US data arrives at 8:30 am; this is the heaviest part of the day.
- Daily pause: the CME market is closed from 5:00 to 6:00 pm New York time (22:00 to 23:00 UTC in winter).
The key point: New York open bars almost always look "high volume" compared with the bars before them. To avoid mislabelling, compare each bar's volume with the average for the same time slot over the previous ten to twenty days.
Stacking timeframes
- Context (4-hour and 1-hour): the dominant trend, the larger ranges and the probable Wyckoff phase.
- Structure (15-minute and 5-minute): intraday ranges and events such as the Spring, UTAD, SOS and SOW.
- Detail (1-minute or footprint): VSA bars and order-flow behaviour at the moment of the event.
A 5-minute Spring against a daily distribution structure carries less weight than the same Spring at the bottom of a daily accumulation. Always read top-down.
One practical note: intraday gold structures usually complete faster and less perfectly than daily ones. Phase B may last only an hour or two, or the ST and the Test may merge into one move. So on lower timeframes, rather than hunting for every schematic event, focus on a few key ones: the stop, the test of the range edge, and the sign of strength or weakness.
A hypothetical trading day
The numbers below are entirely hypothetical and assume a basis of 15 dollars.
| Time | Event | GC | XAUUSD equivalent |
| Asia | Narrow range | 4,082 to 4,094 | 4,067 to 4,079 |
| London open | Poke below the low on high volume, then a return inside the range (possible Spring) | 4,078 | 4,063 |
| One hour later | Test on less than half the volume, low holds | 4,083 | 4,068 |
| New York open | SOS with a wide range and above-average volume for that hour | Through 4,094 | Through 4,079 |
| Afterwards | Low-volume pullback and a higher low (LPS / BU) | 4,095 | 4,080 |
How do we read this sequence? The Asian range built a small cause. The London poke below the range low triggered the stops under the Asian low, but price was not accepted there; that is the key trait of a Spring. The low-volume Test shows sellers are not seriously present on the second visit. At New York, what matters is volume above the average for that hour, not merely above the previous bar. Finally, the low-volume pullback above the old range top shows BU and LPS behaviour.
In this scenario the intraday accumulation hypothesis is invalidated by price accepting below 4,078 on GC (about 4,063 on spot). This table is a reading exercise, not a trade suggestion.
Where does intraday reading fail?
- News minutes: releases such as NFP, CPI and Federal Reserve decisions create fake Springs and Upthrusts.
- Strong trend days: when the market moves one way, intraday ranges are tiny and phase labelling is meaningless.
- Holidays and thin days: low volume weakens the distinction between effort and result.
- Over-labelling: not every five-minute swing is a complete Wyckoff structure.
In all of these cases, standing aside is a professional decision, not a sign of weakness. Gold has several independent sessions each day, and if one session's structure is unclear, the next offers a fresh chance at a cleaner read. Logging these ambiguous days in your journal also helps you recognise unsuitable conditions faster.
Common mistakes
- Reading XAUUSD tick volume instead of real GC volume for subtle signs
- Using a GC level on a spot chart without subtracting the current basis
- Treating every New York open bar as high volume without comparing it with the average for that time slot
- Reading a 5-minute structure without looking at the 4-hour context
- Ignoring roll days and the shift of volume between contracts
What does volume say here?
On the intraday scale, order-flow tools are most valuable. A London Spring that shows heavily negative delta below the Asian low on a footprint chart, with no price progress, is evidence of absorption. The volume profile of the Asian session marks the value area and the point of control (POC), and a return of price inside that area after the poke strengthens the Spring logic. At the SOS, rising cumulative positive delta together with acceptance above the range top is effort and result in agreement.
This data is available only on GC and MGC, and it is very noisy around news. For spot, convert levels with the basis, and do not expect footprint-level precision from tick volume.

Frequently asked questions
How do I measure the basis between GC and XAUUSD?
Look at both prices at the same moment and subtract spot from GC. The number changes as expiry approaches and as interest rates move, so update it several times a day.
What is the best time for intraday Wyckoff reading in gold?
No single hour is best. Ranges usually form in Asia and get tested in London or New York, but the minutes around news releases are better left out of the analysis.
Does MGC replace GC for volume?
MGC has real volume but is smaller and is traded more by retail participants. For reading the behaviour of large players, GC is more representative.
