Acceptance vs Rejection at the Value Area Edge: Two Live Examples
Short answer: When price trades outside the value area, rejection means a brief, low-volume excursion that quickly returns inside; acceptance means closes and volume stay outside and the old edge flips into resistance or support. A simple test is the share of 1-minute closes beyond the edge and whether a retest of the edge holds.
A simple scoring method
- Share of 1-minute closes beyond the edge, per session.
- Share of volume traded beyond the edge.
- Retest of the old edge from the other side: holds or fails?
Two examples, same day (Binance, week starting Monday Oct 12, 2026)
| DOGEUSDT: rejection | XRPUSDT: acceptance | |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly value area | 0.0782–0.0828 (POC 0.0784) | 1.306–1.382 (POC 1.366) |
| Beyond VAL | 7 one-minute closes (Sat 21:37–21:56 UTC), then zero | Closes below VAL: Fri 17%, Sat 61%, Sun 100% |
| Retest | Sunday low 0.07888, back inside value | Sunday high 1.3056, just under the old floor |
DOGE swept below value and came straight back (rejection). XRP stayed below and treated the old value-area low as a ceiling (acceptance).

FAQ
What is acceptance in volume profile?
Price and volume stay beyond a value-area edge, and the market treats the new prices as fair.
What is rejection?
A short, low-volume excursion beyond the edge that returns quickly inside value.
How many closes outside value mean acceptance?
There is no fixed number. Common rules use two 30-minute closes or one hour outside; the key is that volume builds outside.
What is the 80% rule?
A Market Profile rule of thumb: if price re-enters the prior value area and is accepted, it often travels to the other side. It is a tendency, not a law.
