Delta vs CVD: Real Taker Volume vs the Candle Proxy

Short answer: Delta is aggressive buy volume minus aggressive sell volume for one bar or period; CVD (cumulative volume delta) is the running sum of delta since the period started. Real delta comes from trade data or an exchange's taker-buy volume. Proxies that infer delta from candle colour can disagree with the real number, sometimes in sign.

Computing real delta from Binance klines

delta = 2 × taker buy volume − total volume

CVD = running sum of delta from the session or week start

Live example: BTCUSDT, Sunday Oct 18, 2026 (1-minute data)

Window (UTC)Real deltaCandle proxy
02:00 hour (81,657 → 81,831)+225 BTC−103 BTC (opposite sign)
16:00–16:48−25 BTC+85 BTC (opposite sign)
13:00–15:59 (81,983 → 81,103)−193 BTC−346 BTC (same sign)
00:00–16:48 CVD+277 BTC+127 BTC

In trends the proxy and real delta usually agree on direction; in quiet, two-sided hours they often don’t. That is exactly when delta matters most.

Gold

XAUUSD has no central tape. Real gold delta comes from COMEX futures (GC/MGC) trade data; any delta built from CFD candles is a proxy.

FAQ

What is the difference between delta and CVD?

Delta is per bar or period; CVD adds bar deltas together over the session or week.

How do you calculate delta from Binance data?

From klines: delta = 2 × taker buy base volume − total volume for each bar.

Is TradingView delta accurate?

It depends on the data. Tick-based or exchange taker data is real; candle-colour estimates are proxies.

Does positive delta mean price will rise?

No. Heavy positive delta that fails to move price can point to absorption by passive sellers.
