How to Trade Gold for Beginners: XAUUSD Step-by-Step
Short answer: Learn the instrument (XAUUSD is a CFD on the gold price; GC/MGC are the exchange futures), the hours and the costs, size every trade from your stop, practise one simple plan on demo, then trade small. Real volume from gold futures shows where the important levels are.
Step 1: know what you trade
XAUUSD is the gold price in US dollars, traded at brokers as a CFD. GC (100 oz) and MGC (10 oz) are the COMEX gold futures where real volume is recorded. Your broker price sits a few dollars away from futures (the basis).
Step 2: hours and costs
Gold trades almost 24 hours, Sunday evening to Friday evening (New York time), with a daily one-hour halt (sessions). Costs: spread, commission and overnight swap. A $0.30 spread on 1 lot (100 oz) is $30.
Step 3: risk first
Risk a small fixed percentage per trade (for example 1%), put the stop where your idea is wrong, and compute the size from it with the lot size calculator. With 0.01 lot, every $1 move in gold is $1.
Step 4: one plan
Use the levels that real volume creates (value area, POC, VWAP) and the session plan in the gold trading strategy guide. Practise it on demo until the rules are automatic.
Step 5: learn order flow

Mistakes that blow accounts
- No stop, or moving the stop.
- Sizing from hope, not from the stop.
- Trading every news release.
- Buying signals instead of learning a process.
FAQ
Is gold good for beginners?
Gold is liquid and well covered, but it moves tens of dollars a day, so beginners must trade very small and use stops.
How much money do I need to trade gold?
Small accounts can trade 0.01 lot, but a normal day's range can still be a large share of a very small account; risk per trade matters more than account size.
Is XAUUSD the same as gold futures?
No. XAUUSD is a broker CFD on spot gold; GC/MGC are exchange futures with real volume. Prices differ by the basis.
