Liquidity Sweep & Stop Hunt in Gold: What Order Flow Shows

Short answer: A liquidity sweep is a quick push through an obvious high or low that triggers the stops resting there, followed by a return back through the level. In order flow you see a burst of aggressive volume at the level, little follow-through, absorption by a large opposite order, then price reclaiming the level.

Why stops cluster

Traders place stops just beyond obvious highs, lows and round numbers. When price reaches them, the stops become market orders. That burst of liquidity is exactly what a large participant needs to fill a big order on the other side.

What it looks like in order flow

  1. Price trades through the prior low (or high).
  2. The tape shows a burst of aggressive selling (stops + breakout sellers).
  3. Price barely moves further: a large buyer absorbs it, often an iceberg that keeps refilling.
  4. Delta turns, and price reclaims the level.

Real example rebuilt from exchange data: Oct 8 gold: the stop run before the spike.

Using it

Do not trade the first push. Wait for evidence: absorption and a reclaim, with a stop beyond the sweep extreme. Levels to watch each day: XAUUSD analysis today.

FAQ

What is a liquidity sweep in trading?

A brief move through an obvious high or low that triggers resting stops, followed by a return through the level.

Is a stop hunt real?

Stop clusters are real liquidity; large orders often fill there. Order flow shows whether aggression was absorbed or followed through.

How do I avoid getting stopped out by a sweep?

Avoid placing stops exactly at obvious levels; place them where the idea is invalidated and size the trade from that distance.
